-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you would like to upload your Web site using WS_ftp instead of using the Web
Studio Upload Wizard, it's pretty simple to use once you experiment with it a bit
and see how it works.
You'll also like it because you can upload single pages at a time if you want,
instead of uploading the whole site every time you make a change.
It will also give you a much better view of the inner workings of your Web site...
You can get tips on using it (and the free download!) from Gordon's Web Studio
Help Site (the FTP page): You can also check out these simple instructions...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first thing you have to do is save your site in Web Studio. Then you have to
click "save web site to internet", but press cancel before Web Studio does the
actual upload.
This builds your site into your upload folder, which is necessary to then use
WS_ftp for the upload.
Now that you have that done, see if these directions will make using WS_ftp for
the uploading process it a bit more clear...
Here's all you have to do:
1) Open up WS_ftp. (That would be a good start huh?)
2) In the General Properties box that pops up click 'new' and enter this as
follows:
Profile name - your site name
Host name/Address - ftp.xoom.com or whatever is the case for your host!
Host type - Automatic detect
User ID - your user ID
Password - only you know!
And don't forget to put a check mark in the 'remember password' box!
3) Click the 'auto' and the 'binary' buttons
4) Click OK. You should hear a locomotive whistle if it worked, or an "Uh-oh" if
it didn't.
Guess what? You just connected to your web site! Easy huh?
Ok, now every single thing that you have on your home computer can be found
on the left side of WS_ftp...your site on the internet is located on the right. In
order to get your site on the web you just have to find it on your computer (left
side!), and click it over to the web (right side!) with that arrow button > you see
in the middle there...sounds pretty easy so far right?
Ok, now we will find your site on the left. You see that green arrow in the left
corner there? Double-click on it. Now if you scroll down you may see a folder
that says 'Sierra'. If you don't, then double-click again on the green arrow and
scroll down. You should see it now. On my computer this is where the 'Sierra'
folder is hiding. (Yours may or may not be the same.)
Found it? No? Tip: It's not in the 'Sierra Online' folder!
1) Double-click on the 'Sierra' folder.
2) Double-click on the 'Web Studio' folder. (Or Complete Web Studio if this is
the version you're using.)
3) Double-click on the 'Upload' folder.
4) Hey, lookit that! It's all your web sites you made! Now double-click on your
web site folder that you want to upload.
This is what you upload! If you want to upload the whole site, just highlight
everything on the left and send it to the right with the
button in the middle.
Or, if you just want to do one page at a time:
You see the ^ arrow above the green arrow on the left side? Click that. This will
place the html for your pages below the folder it belongs to. If you had made
changes to your 'Page_4' page (for example), and just want to upload that single
page, you would do this:
1) Hold down your 'Ctrl' key.
2) Click once on the 'Page_4' folder and once on the 'Page_4.html' while still
holding the 'Ctrl key'
3) Let go of the 'Ctrl' key (the two items should now be highlighted)
4) Click the > arrow in the middle
5) Watch patiently as your page is sent over. You'll here a distinct alien kind of
sound when it's done.
That's it? That's all there is to it? Yup, that's it! Any questions?
One little side note here...some hosts (like mine) require that you upload into a
certain folder. You need to find this out from your particular host. In my case
when I open WS_ftp there is an "html" folder on the right side that I have to
double-click to open up before I do the transfer over to the right. This may be
the case for you as well, so just make sure before you do your transfer that you
are uploading into the right spot...
This may be a little long-winded, but if you just follow it along step by step, it
should make it real easy...I hope this at least helps a little! -Joe
